Fishing
Camps are located in areas where water is abundant, especially the Bangweulu
swamps, the Zambezi River area, and other lakes. Fishing season is from June
to August and people, sometimes entire families, will live far out for the entire
season. Fish is a main staple and profit is good. The shelters are temporary
and do serve a purpose.
The
structures are very temporary and are built to last one fishing season- only
3 months. Since it is warm and dry during the season, protection is really only
needed against winds.
A
framework of small poles are constructed into a basket. Poles are flexible and
can be shaped into this form.
Tall
grass is used as the wall- roof covering. It is applied thick but with not much
thought to quality.
The
structures vary in size but usually can accommodate 1-3 people. Larger ones
are built to accommodate families. Space is tight and there seems to be a limit,
length of grass, sturdiness of poles, which tend to dictate size. Most have
one opening but structures with two openings were noticed.

Small
poles that are flexible are placed in the ground on one side. The poles are
bent over and placed in the ground on the other side. This creates the frame.
